Mission: The Asian University for Women (AUW) prepares women of high ability and potential to meet society's challenges, effect positive change, and become thoughtful, ethical leaders through a rigorous liberal arts curriculum.

AUW was founded in 2006 "...when the Parliament of Bangladesh ratified the AUW Charter, the first document of its kind in the region. This groundbreaking charter guarantees our institution’s academic freedom, institutional autonomy, policies of non-discrimination, and independence from political interference, as well as exemption from a host of bureaucratic and regulatory procedural requirement that often impede development progress."

In 2010-11, students represent 13 countries: Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, China, India, Iran, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, Palestine, Sri Lanka, and Vietnam.

The university's web site explains:

"The Asian University for Women (AUW) is based on the firm belief that education—especially higher education—provides a critical pathway to leadership development, economic progress, and social and political equality.

"Located in Chittagong, Bangladesh, AUW provides a world-class education to promising young women from diverse cultural, religious, ethnic, and socio-economic backgrounds from across South and South East Asia and the Middle East."
